The last time I worked as an Executive Assistant, it was 2007. That was just a little over 10 years ago, and yet, so much has changed in that time. Social media was just starting to take shape back then. We were all still using Blackberries and trying desperately to make them sync correctly with our computers. Faxing was still an acceptable mode of communication.
Back then, Administrative Professionals Day was not on my radar at all. I didn’t even know this was a thing until after I left the field of admin. Over the past decade, I’ve watched as this once obscure holiday has morphed into an entire month devoted to acknowledging and appreciating the unsung heroes of the workplace. It’s truly been astounding to watch this evolution take place.
More than ever before, I believe that Administrative Professionals are being recognized for the tremendous contributions they make in the business world. I also believe that the role itself is evolving faster than ever before.
Of course, even as things change, much still stays the same. I’ve always said that admin is a uniquely challenging and rewarding position. That’s still true and will continue to be. Admin also offers a wealth of potential for personal and professional growth and fulfillment.
That’s why I continue to devote a good part of my career to supporting the admin field. Throughout the month of April, I’ll be traveling to several different organizations to present training for administrative teams. Offering development opportunities is one of the best ways that organizations can show their appreciation, and I’m so happy to be leading these programs.
As we enter this very special month of Administrative Appreciation, I want to acknowledge admins around the world. You deserve to be celebrated all year long. One day, not too far from now, you will be.
In your honor, I’ll be hosting a special online event this month. Due to my incredibly busy travel schedule, this will take the place of our monthly training webinar and Q&A session. I hope you’ll join us for the celebration!
The Evolving Admin (Free Webinar)
In today’s workplace, the administrative role is significantly different from what it was a decade ago, or even just a few years ago. It has evolved dramatically and continues to with each passing year. As the role itself becomes more critical to business operations, the expectations for those in the role shift and expand.
With ever-increasing demands and ever-shrinking resources, admins need to adopt a new set of skills to succeed. In this session, we’ll take a look at where the field is heading and what you can do to stay competitive in the future.
As an attendee, you will learn…
- The key skills that employers consider most essential for their administrative professionals
- The biggest competency “gaps” that exist in the current admin workforce—and how you can position yourself to fill them
