Welcome (back) to Eat Your Career!
You may notice that things have changed around here quite a bit. I’ve spent that past year revising and updating this website, all on my own(!), in an effort to reconnect with what I love the most about my own career—inspiring others.
I firmly believe that we all have to take a step back from time to time and re-evaluate life. That’s what I’ve been doing for the past two years. I mentioned in a previous blog post that I had accepted a full time role in corporate training at a local financial services firm here in Denver. It was a great opportunity that came around at the perfect time. I needed stability and simplicity, and that’s exactly what I got.
Well, two months ago, I quit. More on that in a minute…
Being back in the “traditional” professional world for two years confirmed a few things for me:
1. I’m really good at what I do.
Yep, I said it. I hope you don’t mind my honesty here.
The thing is: I had been questioning myself for a while. Imposter syndrome is a real thing and I was definitely suffering. After 5 years being self-employed, I was full of self-doubt. Maybe I wasn’t such a capable trainer. Maybe I wasn’t delivering the value I thought I was. Sometimes, it’s hard to get an accurate view of yourself in the self-employment bubble.
But, back in corporate America, I thrived. I excelled in my role and earned a promotion in the first three months. I repeatedly exceeded expectations and truly demonstrated (to myself and others) that I am a top training professional. My expertise in professional development is solid.
2. I am an entrepreneur.
While my time in corporate life was very successful, I felt continuously pulled to get back here, to the Eat Your Career community and the many things I was doing to serve it.
I have SO much to share with the world. Even though things appeared quiet here on the website, I was working away like crazy behind the scenes. Over the past two years, I:
- Wrote a new book called The Proactive Professional
- I updated most of my digital products and created a new e-book called Networking Naturally
- Moved this website to a new platform capable of offering more cool stuff to all of you, like the Free Career Resources Library…which I’ve already stocked with a ton of downloadable workbooks, worksheets, audio coaching sessions and more!
While working a full time position, I was also still speaking and training at conferences and onsite at various corporations. Needless to say, I was busy. But it just reconfirmed to me that I want to have the biggest reach possible with my work. Being self-employed is the best way to make that happen.
So, that leads me back to quitting my job.
It wasn’t something I jumped into lightly. I actually had to do a lot of career coaching with myself (which is tricky) to figure out what I really wanted. I had to consider what I would sacrifice by leaving (stability, good friends at work, comfort…) and what I might gain in exchange.
I gave my 2-week notice at work in September and it was bittersweet. I knew it was the right thing, but it was also a big risk. Going back out on my own after two years “away” was (and is) scary.
I re-launched the website earlier this week and, in many ways, I’m re-launching my career. I’m starting over, from a brand new place. I’m moving forward with a brand new perspective. I’m lifting off and headed into brand new territory.
The website re-launch itself hasn’t been without its glitches, and surely there will be a few more to come. That’s how it goes when you’re making changes and improving. I never expected any of this to be easy. But I truly believe it’s worth it.
So what does all of this mean for you?
Well, most importantly (in my opinion), the new website means you have access to a whole new world of free career resources through the library. I hope you’ll take advantage. (Remember to sign up here.)
I’ll also be holding a free “re-launch party” webinar on Tuesday, December 13th, where I’ll be giving away a ton of cool prizes and I’ll go even deeper into some of what’s been going on around here. My goal with the party is to help energize you and encourage you to think about your own “re-launch.” Maybe there’s a piece of your life you want to start over in some way or something you’d like to shift focus on. I’ll give you strategies for how to do that.
NOTE: This webinar has already taken place but you can watch the replay in the Career Resource Library!
You can also expect to see a lot of great new stuff here on Eat Your Career in the coming months. Here’s just a taste:
- I’ll be re-launching all three of my existing training programs as well as launching two new ones. (None of the programs are open for registration yet but you can get on the early notification lists by visiting the program pages.)
- I’ll be hosting monthly free coaching calls for members of the free resource library*.
- I’ll be hosting free monthly webinars, also for members of the free library*.
- I’ll be starting a few new blog series that I’ve been looking forward to writing for some time.
- And much, much more.
*Hopefully you can see that membership has its privileges! Plus members will get special (substantial) discounts on programs, services and products.
Onward and upward…
So this is what a re-launch (for me) looks like. It’s exciting, scary and exhilarating. It’s also super messy from time to time.
With that, I want you to know that you may encounter occasional problems with the new website; I’m still fixing some of the glitches so it’s not perfect. But I firmly believe that waiting for perfection (with anything) is a surefire way to never get anything done. If and when you find problems, please contact me right away and provide details about what’s happening.
As with any re-launch, things will continue to evolve, so keep your eye out. More will be revealed…
Thanks for sticking with me and being such an inspiring community. I’m looking forward to the next phase, and I hope you are too!
